How do I install Chat with your Books in Claude?
- Go to your Dashboard and copy your API key
- Open the Claude configuration file:
- Mac:
~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json - Windows:
%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
- Mac:
- Add the MCP server configuration (see Setup page)
- Restart Claude Desktop (important!)
I get the error message "No connection found"
This means your Exact Online account is not (or no longer) connected. Solutions:
- Go to Connect and reconnect
- Check that you selected the correct region (Netherlands, Belgium, etc.)
- If you have multiple Exact Online accounts, make sure you choose the right one
My API key is not working
Check the following:
- The key starts with
exa_- copy the complete key - There are no extra spaces before or after the key
- The key has not been revoked (check your Dashboard)
- You have restarted Claude Desktop after changing the config
Still not working? Generate a new key via the dashboard.
How do I rename my API key?
You can give your API keys a recognizable name:
- Go to your Dashboard
- Click on the pencil icon next to the API key you want to rename
- Enter a new name (e.g., "Claude Desktop" or "Work laptop")
- Click "Save"
This helps you distinguish between multiple API keys.
Can I connect multiple administrations?
Yes! After connecting to Exact Online, all administrations you have access to become available automatically.
- Free plan: 1 active administration
- Pro plan: Up to 5 administrations
- Enterprise: Unlimited
You can ask Claude: "Show my administrations" to see which ones are available.
How do I set a default administration?
You can set a default administration so your AI assistant uses it automatically:
- Go to your Dashboard
- Scroll to the "Administrations" section
- Click on the administration you want to set as default
- The chosen administration will be marked and automatically used for queries
You can always specify a different administration in your question.
💡 Usage
What are "commands" (API calls)?
Commands are tool calls to the MCP server. Each time your AI assistant fetches data from Exact Online, it counts as 1 command.
Important: One question can use multiple commands. For example:
- "What is my revenue this month?" → 1-2 commands (fetch revenue)
- "Compare revenue from January and February" → 2-3 commands (fetch two periods)
- "Give me a financial overview" → 3-5 commands (fetch multiple datasets)
In your Dashboard you can see how many commands you've used. The number of commands per question depends on the complexity of your question.
What questions can I ask?
You can ask questions about:
- Invoices (sales and purchase)
- Outstanding items and debtors
- Relations (customers and suppliers)
- Bank transactions
- General ledger accounts and trial balance
- VAT returns

Can the AI make changes to my accounting?
No. All tools are read-only. No invoices, relations or other data can be created, modified or deleted.
This is a deliberate choice for security. The AI can only read and analyze data.
How do I know if the AI output is correct?
Always verify! AI can make mistakes. Tips:
- Ask for invoice numbers and references
- Spot-check in Exact Online
- For financial decisions: always verify
- Ask for the source: "Which invoices does this total come from?"
Why am I not getting results?
Possible causes:
- No data: The requested period contains no invoices/transactions
- Wrong administration: Specify which administration you mean
- Too broad: Ask more specifically, e.g., "invoices from January" instead of "all invoices"
- Permissions: Your Exact Online user may not have access to certain data
💳 Subscription & Payment
How many commands do I have left?
Check your Dashboard for your current usage.
- Free: 200 commands (~60 questions) per month
- Starter: 750 commands (~250 questions) per month
- Pro: 2,500 commands (~800 questions) per month
Your limit resets automatically on the 1st of each month. See also: What are commands?
How do I upgrade to Pro?
Go to Pricing and click "Start Pro". You will be redirected to a secure payment page.
After payment, your upgrade is immediately active.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Go to your Dashboard and click "Manage subscription". There you can:
- Cancel your subscription
- Change your payment method
- Download invoices
After cancellation, you keep Pro access until the end of your billing period.
Do I get an invoice?
Yes, after each payment you automatically receive an invoice by email. You can also download all invoices via "Manage subscription" in your dashboard.
🔒 Security & Privacy
Is my data secure?
Yes, we take security very seriously:
- OAuth 2.0: We never see your Exact Online password
- Encryption: Tokens are stored encrypted
- EU hosting: All data stays within the EU (Cloudflare EU)
- Read-only: No write access to your accounting
- No storage: Query results are not stored
Who can see my data?
Only you (via your API key). We have no access to your accounting data. The MCP server fetches data on your behalf and sends it directly to your AI assistant.
Note: The AI assistant you use (Claude, ChatGPT) processes your data according to their own privacy policy.
How do I revoke access?
Two options:
- Revoke API key: In your Dashboard, click "Revoke Key"
- Full disconnection: In Exact Online, go to Settings → Apps → Revoke access for "Chat with your Books"
⚠️ Error Messages
Error: "Token expired"
Your Exact Online connection has expired. This can happen with:
- Password change in Exact Online
- Manually revoking app access
- Technical problems with token refresh
Solution: Reconnect
Error: "Rate limit exceeded"
You have reached your monthly command limit. Options:
- Wait: Limit resets on the 1st of the month
- Upgrade: Starter (€19) gives you 750 commands, Pro (€49) gives you 2,500 commands

Error: "Division not found"
The requested administration does not exist or you do not have access to it.
- First ask: "Which administrations do I have?"
- Check that you are using the correct name/code
- Check your permissions in Exact Online
Claude does not respond to my questions
Check:
- Is the MCP server configured? Check Claude's settings
- Did you restart Claude Desktop after changing the config?
- Is your API key correct? Test with a simple question: "Test the Exact Online connection"
- Check the Cloudflare status for outages
